1. What is 'Vaastu'?
Derived from the Sanskrit word 'vastu', which means 'energy', 'Vaastu' refers to the man-made form of building and structures that are filled with this energy. 'Vaastu Shastra' refers to the texts that elucidate the principles of Vaastu and deal mainly with sustainable design for architectural works.

2. What is the significance of Vaastu Shastra?
A house built in accordance with Vaastu, as described in the Vaastru Shastra, is said to optimize the inflow and outflow of energy, light, breeze, effluents, etc, harmonized with the surrounding environment so that the dwellers can enjoy a superior quality of life and the community also makes the best use of available natural resources. In the modern world however, there are so many interpretations of the original vaastu shastra that confusions and contradictions have become common. But in spite of this, a great majority of people believe that following Vaastu guidelines in constructing a house does lead to a living space more condusive to success and happiness.

3. What is the relationship between Vaastu and Feng Shui?
Vaastu is conceptually similar to Chinese Feng Shui in that both aim at to harmonizing the flow of life-energy (prana in Sanskrit or qi in Chinese) through the house. But they differ in the details, such as the exact directions in which various objects, rooms, materials etc are to be placed.

4. How should rooms be placed according to Vaastu?
According to Vaastu, directions suited to some specific purposes are as follow:
  • North: the treasury room, or, in contemporary terms, a store, study, or safe
  • North-East: the prayer room
  • East: Bathrooms and utility areas
  • South-East: the kitchen
  • West: the dining room

6. Which are the important areas in a house according to Feng Shui?
  • The entrance and Main front-door are considered extremely important in Feng Shui. This is the 'mouth' of the house and is said to control the flow of energy in and out of the house.
  • The kitchen is a close next in importance as it is the place that provides the family with its sustenance. It is even considered sacred in Feng Shui
  • The master bedroom is very important, as you spend a great deal of time here, and so this place must facilitate a free flow of positive energy or 'qi'
